Beverly Oviedo

Beverly Oviedo is a certified meeting professional and founder of Sustainable Solutions by Design, a company developed to help organizations integrate sustainable practices into their organizational culture.
Ms. Oviedo’s credits are international as well as national. She spent five months in London, England, working with an international team to create workshops on sustainable practices for NGO leaders from six developing countries. As an international keynote speaker, she presented on Sustainable Development at Peking University’s Conference in 2009, which celebrated China’s 30th year of opening up to the world.
Recently, she co-authored the online sustainability text, A Meeting Planner’s Toolkit for Planning and Managing Green Meeting at www.sustainablesolutionsbydesign.com. Articles published include HSMAI Meeting Planners Guidebook for 2008 and a model to embed CSR into the organizational culture by the International Society for Performance Improvement (ISPI).
As a member of the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International faculty, she presented a session, “Going Green,” in Washington, D.C., and she also developed a webinar series, “Guide for Going Green.” In addition, she participated as a panelist in sessions related to “How a Hotel Qualifies to be Green” in Dallas, TX, in 2008, and a session on waste management for the Green Meeting Industry Council at its annual conference in Pittsburgh, PA, in 2009. In Spring 2010, she gave a workshop for students, Future Leaders Forum, for the Green Meeting Industry Council in Denver, Colorado sponsored by IMEX.
Her teaching experience includes a class on Sustainable Events at San Francisco State University as well as an online course as an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Chico. At CSU, Chico, her class, RECR 498, Green Meetings and Events: Sustainable Event Planning and Management Practices, was the first in North America to be certified by the British Standards Institute for planning and managing a sustainable event meeting the criteria of BS8901.
As a research associate at California State University, Monterey Bay, she assisted with the creation of an Institute of Innovation and Economic Development. For the Institute, she developed and project managed the first central coast Sustainable Hospitality Symposium in October 2010.
As a consultant in waste management, she assisted both the Monterey Institute of International Studies (TEDX event) and Sustainable Life Media (Sustainable Brands Conference) achieve their goals of zero waste.
She presently is actively participating in the development of new sustainable event standards as secretary and credentialed representative of the US TAG PC 250 committee working with 30 countries to create an ISO standard by the 2012 Olympic Games and a member of the E60 sustainability committee responsible for the APEX/ASTM new standard for meetings and events.
Ms. Oviedo’s management experience spans more than 25 years and includes being a teacher, a sustainable development research associate, an owner of a retail store for extreme sports, an art director, a dental practice owner/health care administrator, and a event and meeting certified professional.
She is a member of The International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP), the International Society for Performance Improvement, the U.S. Green Building Council, the Green Meetings Industry Council, and the Society of Government Meeting Planners. She presently is a foundation board member for the Green Meeting Industry Council.
Ms. Oviedo has a Bachelor of Science degree from California State University, Chico, in Instructional Design and Technology; a Bachelor of Arts Degrees in Communication Design, with an option in Graphic Design and Web; and a minor in Tourism. She has completed her Masters Degree in the Science of Instructional Design and Technology from California State University, Monterey Bay. Additionally, she is a graduate of the Presidio Graduate School Executive Program in Sustainable Management, in San Francisco and an internationally accredited sustainability manager by the Sustainable Event Alliance of Australia.
